Senior Home Care is one of the fastest growing fields for Home Health Aides. If you are just starting out as an HHA you may want to consider Senior Home Care.

Home Health Care covers a broad spectrum of services.  One of the fastest growing fields in the entire health industry is Senior Home Care.  As the baby boomer generation continues to age, there is an ever growing population of affluent seniors that are choosing independence over spending their golden years in assisted living facilities.  The need for care providers capable of working in these peoples’ homes continues to grow as well.

Senior Home Care Agencies Hire a Wide Array of Health Professionals

Because of the broad range of services provided by Senior Care Agencies, they typically employ nurses and therapists of varying certifications and skill levels.  Below you will find a list of just some of the positions available with most Home Health Care Agencies.

Basic Services Provided by Senior Home Care Agencies

Most Senior Home Care Agencies offer the following standard services:

  • Bathing
  • Skin care/nail care
  • Oral hygiene
  • Shaving
  • Perform light housekeeping
  • Change of bed linen
  • Light laundry
  • Assist with Dressing
  • Check Temperature
  • Check Pulse
  • Assist with ambulation, transfers and exercise
  • Monitor Respiration
  • Report changes in the client’s condition
  • Companionship

Most of these tasks will be handled by a Certified Home Health Aide, however any significant medical needs will usually be taken care of by a LPN or an RN depending on what is specifically needed.  One of the great things about working for an agency is that you will be able to continue working for the same company as you work your way up the nursing ladder.  You will not have to worry about struggling to find a new job every time you want to seek further education.

A Final Note on Senior Home Care

One final thing to consider when you are looking into becoming a Senior Home Care professional are the special needs that some Seniors may have.  For many elder patients this will be the first time they have had to rely on someone other than a spouse or child for their care.  It can be a difficult transition and as a Home Health Aide you are directly in the line of fire when the anger or frustration comes out.  You have to be able to handle criticism and complaints in a calm and understanding manner or you will not last long in the Senior Home Care field.
